Gordon Strachan makes generous £11,250 donation to Edinburgh charity LIFT

A support and advocacy service based in North West Edinburgh has received £11,250 from ex-Scotland manager Gordon Strachan.

The Scottish footballing icon finished third in the Legends Tour Mauritius 2022 and received the £11,250 prize for his chosen charity which was Low Income Families Together (LIFT).

The donation will go towards “feeding hundreds of families” across the North of Edinburgh.

LIFT offers services relating to benefits advice including Universal Credit support, housing advice, homeless support, increasing self-esteem, employability support, one to one support and group work.

But over recent years, the centre has been inundated with families and individuals struggling to feed themselves.

An increasing number of those trying to access the services are themselves working or have someone from within their household that works.

As a result LIFT has been offering food parcels as well as a community pantry amongst other food related services.

However the organisation does not receive funding for food services and has to rely on their own fundraising efforts or donations from good samaritans.

But despite the challenges faced by the centre, they have welcomed the huge donation from the former Aberdeen and Leeds winger.

Strachan, who is related to Pauline Bowie, LIFT manager, managed to secure £11,250 for LIFT by finishing third in the Legend Tour in Mauritius last month.

On this, Pauline said: “My big cousin is Gordon Strachan and he has just taken part in the legends tour in Mauritius and came third.

“He chose LIFT as his chosen charity and won £11,250.

“What Gordon has donated will allow us to feed 100’s of families over the year.

“We don’t get any funding for food so if I’m not buying it we have to fund raise or depend on donations so this is a huge weight off my shoulders.”
