A former Miami congressman who has long been close with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio received a 10-year prison sentence on Friday for his involvement in an undisclosed $50 million lobbying initiative for Venezuela during the initial Trump administration.
David Rivera, a Republican, has remained behind bars since a jury convicted him in May on every count, which encompassed failure to register as a foreign agent and conspiracy to commit money laundering through his efforts on behalf of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s government.
