Google releases new AI detection tool – how it works

  • Google has released its SynthID Detector tool to allow the public to identify whether text, image, audio or video files were created using artificial intelligence.
  • The technology relies on imperceptible watermarks that Google has already applied to more than 180 billion images and videos, alongside 240,000 years of audio content.
  • Available through Google DeepMind , the detector currently works on media generated by AI platforms from Google, OpenAI , Nvidia , Kakao, and Apple .
  • The invisible watermarks remain detectable even after media is cropped or modified with filters, without altering the quality for human users.
  • The launch aligns with the European Union 's AI Act, which requires generative AI platforms to make their outputs identifiable to automated systems.
