‘Good morning!’ Lionel Messi cuddles World Cup trophy in bed after arriving back in Argentina for parade

Lionel Messi woke up alongside the trophy of his dreams on Tuesday morning after lifting the World Cup with Argentina.

The superstar, 35, posed with the iconic solid-gold trophy in bed for an Instagram posted captioned: “Good morning!”

As well as snoozing with the World Cup, Messi smiled for the camera before casually cradling it as he enjoyed his morning tea.

The Argentina squad landed in Buenos Aires in the early hours of Tuesday after flying back from Qatar via Rome. They were greeted by a mass of fans and enjoyed a bus parade from the airport.

“I want to be in Argentina to see how crazy it is,” Messi said before leaving Qatar on Monday. “I want them to wait for me, I can’t wait to go there and enjoy it with them.”

At 3pm GMT today, they will celebrate their triumph at the Obelisk in the centre of the city having claimed their third World Cup and first since Diego Maradona’s triumph in 1986.

A huge crowd is expected after Argentina declared Tuesday a national holiday.

Messi’s teammate, Paulo Dybala, commented on the post: “Beautiful morning, right?!”
