With the Easter bank holiday just around the corner, many people around Ireland are looking forward to a long weekend off of work.
Even though it comes around every year, there can often be confusion around when the Easter bank holiday falls, and when workers are due to get a higher rate of pay for taking a public holiday shift.
Many people think that Good Friday, which occurs on April 7 this year, is a bank holiday. However, in Ireland, this is not a holiday. Even though so many businesses are closed on Good Friday, those who are scheduled to work on the day won’t be entitled to public holiday pay.

If you are rostered on to work on the official bank holiday Monday, April 10, however, you are entitled to one of the following:
- A paid day off on the public holiday
- An additional day of annual leave
- An additional day's pay
- A paid day off within a month of the public holiday
You can ask your employer at least 21 days before a public holiday, which of the alternatives will apply. If your employer does not respond at least 14 days before the public holiday, you are entitled to take the actual public holiday as a paid day off.
