A golfer struck by lightning north of Brisbane was likely saved by his playing partner, who gave him CPR until paramedics arrived.

Dirk Kotze is in a critical condition after he was struck at Wantima Golf Course in Brendale on Sunday afternoon as intense storms swept across Queensland's south-east.

Speaking outside the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital where he is being treated, Mr Kotze's family thanked his golf partner "who didn't give up on him", and bystanders who risked their own safety to help.

The family believe Mr Kotze was doing his best to shelter from the storm when it happened.

"For them to act so quickly and selflessly, to give first aid, I know they did it for quite a little while, is obviously a big part of what has saved his life," his stepson's wife Mel Swart said.

"Without CPR for a prolonged time he really wouldn't have had any shot at all, they've done an incredible job at saving his life and to allow him to have the treatment that he's receiving at the moment, and we're so grateful for that.

"Without that, it probably would have been a very different story."

His family said there was now hope for his recovery, although there was "a long and uncertain road ahead".

Mr Kotze's stepson Daniel Swart said there was "no-one in need he wouldn't put his life on hold for", and the Moreton Bay man was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many.

"We are encouraged to be able to report that he's making slow, positive steps to recovery," he added.

Wantima Golf Course declined to comment.
