Golden Globes 2024: winners, losers and a cringe monologue - The Standard podcast

Hollywood stars were out for the 81st Golden Globes - and we’ve got the highlights and red carpet gossip for you.

The awards ceremony’s producers will have been hoping to claw back some credibility after two years of slumps in viewing figures.

Comedian Jo Koy was the short-notice host taking the helm for the first time - but many reviews have been unkind about the quality of his presenting skills.

Some of Koy’s jokes fell pretty flat, with one particular lead balloon sparking a ‘death stare’ from singer Taylor Swift in the celeb-packed audience.

Many of the biggest films and television shows of the past year were up for awards - including Oppenheimer, Barbie, Wonka, The Color Purple, Succession and The Bear. The Crown, Killers of the Flower Moon, American Fiction and Saltburn were also in the running.

So, who went home from the Beverly Hills Hilton with another trophy for the cabinet, and who left the three-hour ceremony disappointed?

In this episode of the Standard podcast, you’ll hear speeches from stars such as Barbie’s Margot Robbie and Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy, plus singer Billie Eilish, Matthew McFaddyen with the Succession cast and Ayo Edebiri from The Bear.

Plus, discover the contents of the celebs' luxury goody bags worth a reported $500,000.

This year’s ceremony marked what The Guardian described as “a breezy return to form” following a 2021 investigation by the Los Angeles Times that discovered no black members among the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which made nominations.

The association was subsequently disbanded and the show, then acquired by Dick Clark Productions, now has 300 ethnically diverse journalists from 76 countries on the voting panel.

For news of the winners, the also-rans and drama on and off-stage, we’re joined by the Standard’s celebrity correspondent, Tina Campbell.
