Godzilla Minus Zero: everything we know about the monster movie sequel

Godzilla Minus Zero trailer still sees kaiju in New York City.

The new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero has been released, and it's given us the best idea yet of what to expect from the sequel to Takashi Yamazaki's Oscar-winning film. This time around, we'll be picking up two years after the events of Minus One and will be transporting the drama stateside.

The new footage teased a kaiju descending on the city (and the Statue of Liberty in particular) as well as more emotional stakes for the Shikishima family. Alongside a new trailer, Yamazaki has also shared some insight into what we can expect from the sequel and we have some casting news, which fans will be excited to hear.

You can read all about these details, as well as everything else we know about Godzilla Minus Zero below. It's also worth bookmarking this page because as we get closer to the 2026 release date, more details are sure to land about the monster movie.

Godzilla Minus Zero trailer

The Godzilla Minus Zero trailer is here and it takes the kaiju to the Big Apple. Just a teaser trailer at this point, the 40-second clip shows Godzilla descending on the country whose nuclear testing is behind his origins. We also know he'll be reuniting with the Shikishima family, too, as we see Ryunosuke Kamiki back as former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima, as well as Minami Hamabe playing Noriko Ōishi once again. Some of the cast for Godzilla Minus Zero has been confirmed and it features plenty of familiar faces from the first movie. We expect some more names to join this list soon, but as it stands the stars are as follows:

  • Ryunosuke Kamiki – Koichi
  • Minami Hamabe – Noriko
  • Sae Nagatani as Akiko

Godzilla Minus Zero plot

As well as a first trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, we also have an official plot. This reads: "Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. Additionally confirmed out of CinemaCon, Ryunosuke Kamiki, the hero who faced Godzilla’s terror in Godzilla Minus One, returns as Koichi Shikishima, and is joined by Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi, who miraculously survived Godzilla’s first attack on Tokyo."

Speaking at CinemaCon in April 2026, writer/director Yamazaki also shared some insight into what the story will entail. "This film will be a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One," he said (per The Hollywood Reporter). "It will continue to follow the story of the Shikishima family."

He added: "In this new film, an even deeper despair will descend upon Japan and the Shikishima family. When faced when overwhelming and inescapable force, how do people fight back? The journey from Minus to Zero will not be an easy one." It sounds like the stakes are higher than ever before in the Minus One sequel, and only time will tell how these beloved characters fare.

Is Godzilla Minus Zero connected to the Legendary Monsterverse?

No, Godzilla Minus Zero is not connected to any other Godzilla movie apart from its immediate predecessor, Godzilla Minus One.

The Legendary Monsterverse movies (and TV show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) are their own separate thing. Don't expect King Kong to show up in Godzilla Minus Zero, basically.
