'Godzilla Minus Zero' Director Defends Historic R Rating as Critics Deliver First Reviews

'Godzilla Minus Zero' director Takashi Yamazaki dug in his heels for the sequel, stating that 'censoring it or cutting it was just not an option' (Credit: Toho)

Godzilla has received its first ever R rating in the franchise's 72-year history with 'Godzilla Minus Zero', and director Takashi Yamazaki insists he refused to cut key scenes to secure a lower classification.

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 'Godzilla Minus One' premiered at the 2026 New York Film Festival, where Yamazaki acknowledged that a PG-13 rating could have opened the sequel to a much wider audience, but said censoring or removing certain moments was never on the table.
