As a later-in-life Godzilla fan, I missed Destroy All Monsters Melee back when I was the ripe old age of 17. First coming out in 2002 on GameCube, it hit the original Xbox the following year. Copies are hard to find and expensive, and, well, I don't have an OG Xbox anymore, either.
That doesn't matter though now; with Atari and the original developer, Pipeworks, announcing as part of the Summer Game Fest week, this cult classic is getting the remaster treatment. Not only this, but it's going to be up against a foe the likes of which The King of the Monsters has never seen before.
It's slated to launch on November 3, 2026. And why does November sound familiar? GTA 6, of course. While every other developer and publisher is scrambling to avoid November like Godzilla's Atomic Breath, Atari is jumping in with both feet.
"The kaiju vs. kaiju brawler is back, completely remastered for modern consoles. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered updates the 2002 fighter with enhanced visuals and quality-of-life improvements. Choose your monster and battle it out with a range of brutal attacks through recreated cities and other locations. Face off against your friends and foes in local co-op or new online multiplayer."
A November launch, in this instance, actually makes a ton of sense, though. The epic sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, debuts on the very same day in Japan, following a few days later in the West.
Being a modern release, that means we get online multiplayer, alongside the remastered versions of existing modes, including Destruction. There will be eight locations with day and night variants, and the in-game unlock system has been improved from the original.
And come on, who doesn't want to tail-whip a building at King Ghidorah?
PS5 and Switch 2 owners will get a physical release to add to their collections, but over here on Team Xbox and PC, we'll have to settle for digital only. Nevertheless, GTA 6 or no GTA 6, this is going straight into my basket.
If you're on PC, you can wishlist Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered on Steam right now.
