God of War: Laufey puts Faye in the spotlight as PlayStation unveils a new adventure

Faye is finally stepping out of Kratos’ shadow.

During the latest State of Play showcase, PlayStation officially unveiled God of War: Laufey, a new mainline entry from Santa Monica Studio that puts the legendary Giant warrior at the center of her own adventure.

While Faye’s death set the events of 2018’s God of War into motion, players have only ever learned about her through stories, memories, and brief flashbacks. God of War: Laufey finally gives fans the chance to step into her shoes and experience her journey firsthand, confirming earlier rumors that Santa Monica Studio was developing a Faye-led entry in the franchise.

God of War Laufey follows Faye after her death

According to Santa Monica Studio in the PlayStation blog, Faye awakens after her funeral in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from different mythologies gather after death. The warrior quickly discovers that the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are in danger, forcing her to embark on a new quest through the realm of the gods.

The Everywhen serves as both the birthplace and destination of magic, bringing together deities and creatures from various mythologies. During the reveal at State of Play, the developer teased encounters with mythological figures such as Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war, and Begtse, the Mongolian god of war, while hinting at deeper mysteries surrounding the nature of the afterlife itself.

Faye gets her own combat style

Santa Monica Studio says one of its primary goals was ensuring Faye feels distinct from Kratos while retaining the core identity of the God of War series. The developer described her combat as more fluid and agile, combining elements from the franchise’s Greek-era action with the modern Norse games’ world-building and storytelling.

Unlike Kratos’ heavier fighting style, Faye can seamlessly move between ground and aerial combat, allowing players to chain attacks together with greater mobility. The studio also revealed that her abilities as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar play a major combat role.

One of her signature powers allows her to separate an enemy’s soul from its body, creating opportunities for unique combos and crowd-control tactics. The developer says these abilities become significantly stronger within the Everywhen, a realm saturated with ancient magic.

New companions join Faye’s adventure

Faye will not be alone on her journey. Shortly after arriving in the Everywhen, she meets two companions who accompany her throughout the story.

Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid, is described as a cosmic cube determined to protect his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen. Rue, voiced by Perlina Lau, serves as the guardian of a powerful enchanted sword that eventually becomes one of Faye’s primary weapons. Meanwhile, Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye after previously portraying the character in God of War: Ragnarök.

A new chapter for the God of War franchise

Santa Monica Studio describes God of War: Laufey as the next mainline chapter in the franchise and an opportunity to explore one of its most important yet least-seen characters. The game promises to dive deeper into Faye’s humanity, strengths, flaws, and legacy while expanding the series beyond the events of Ragnarök.

Recently, the developer also confirmed the GOW trilogy remaster is in work, and they released a platformer with the Sons of Sparta earlier this year. God of War: Laufey is available to wishlist now through PlayStation, with additional details expected closer to launch.
