God of War Greek trilogy remake is official, but it's "still very early in development" and the devs want to "ask for your patience"

God of War 3.

In today's PlayStation State of Play broadcast, Sony confirmed that it's begun development on the long-rumored God of War trilogy remake. This project will rebuild the original Greek trilogy for the modern era, but there's not much detail on what it'll look like, as the devs say it's not very far along just yet.

"This project is still very early in development," according to a PlayStation Blog post, "so we ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared. When we can come back with an update, we aim to make it a big one!"

If you want to hear Kratos himself, by which I mean original voice actor TC Carson, deliver the news, check out the video below. He's clearly very excited about it.

I'm very curious to see just how substantial this remake is. Sony's previous remakes, like with The Last of Us, have often felt barely necessary, but the original God of War trilogy is much older, and truly modern versions of those games would look much different than the OGs. But equally, it's tough to imagine Sony committing to fully rebuilding the three massive originals as one all-new game, unless this is remake project on the Final Fantasy 7 scale. I'm very eager to find out what shape the game takes.

That's not the only big news for God of War fans, as today also saw the announcement and shadowdrop of God of War: Sons of Sparta, an equally long-rumored project that offers a look at Kratos' early days in a 2D action platformer format.

"As we look to the future," the devs say, "we also want to invest in the past and tend to the series’ roots that got us to where we are today. We know that remaking the Greek saga has been a frequent request – the genuine, passionate interest from fans to see the original games return is something we’re very thankful for and can’t wait to share more when the time comes!"
