Gobsmacked Edinburgh tourist's train home delayed by Queen arriving at Waverley station

A tourist making their way back home from Edinburgh has shared how the Queen arriving in the capital delayed their train leaving Waverley Station.

In an image shared with Edinburgh Live, the Queen can be seen slowly sauntering from her train to a waiting car that appears to have pulled up at the edge of the platform.

Mick Kendrick, from Coalville in England, posted the photo shortly after 11.00am on Monday June 27.

But Mick was surprised to have been able to catch a glimpse of one of the most famous faces in the world.

He said: “It was quite a strange experience to be fair, not one I was expecting to see when trying to get home.

“I mean what were the chances of seeing the Queen? Nobody could believe it.”

Live had reported that the head of state was in Edinburgh with her youngest son Edward, and his wife, Sophie, known as the Earl and Countess of Forfar on Monday for the historic Ceremony of the Keys - the traditional opener to Holyrood week for the Royals.

The monarch has pulled back from a number of public events, including during the bank holiday weekend that celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, due to health issues.

But she attended the event at Holyrood Palace and was handed the keys of the city and welcomed to her "ancient and hereditary kingdom of Scotland".

The trip comes after the recent Platinum Jubilee celebrations for the Queen, in which she pledged to continue to serve the country "to the best of my ability supported by my family".

Charles, known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland and the Princess Royal will all take part in a series of public engagements in Scotland over the coming days.

However, Andrew, known as the Earl of Inverness in Scotland, no longer carries out public duties and will not be involved.
