The state government's decision to organise an all-India football tournament on Dayanand Bandodkar's 50th death anniversary is certain to bring the Gold Trophy back into the spotlight.
Once considered to be India's most expensive sports trophy, the Bandodkar Gold Trophy now lies inside a rickety cupboard at the Goa Football Association (GFA) godown in Panaji. According to a notice pasted on the cupboard, the trophy - donated by Goa's first chief minister -- has not been touched since October 25, 2018, when an evaluation suggested that the trophy had "60 percent copper, 29 percent silver and 11 percent gold."
