Goalkeeper needs 40 stitches after horror clash in amateur Bristol game

An amateur footballer in Bristol is recovering at home after a horror injury in a game left him requiring 40 stitches around his eye.

Goalkeeper Carl Bush was taken to hospital after suffering extensive muscle damage to his face following an aerial challenge in his team’s match on Saturday.

Bush was playing for Hengrove Athletic in their home game against Oldland Abbotonians in the Toolstation Western League Division One, and had already saved a penalty before the clash after half an hour of the game.

The veteran keeper managed to be helped off the field but was quickly taken to hospital, as his teammates - with a stand-in keeper - went on to lose 3-1 to a couple of late goals.

Hengrove Athletic’s spokesperson Martin McConachie said the injury was a ‘nasty looking’ one just above his eye, and everyone at the ground had been worried about him after he was taken to hospital.

“With ‘Bushy’ widely respected as one of the best and most well respected keepers in the League, the club have received several messages from people asking for a progress report on Carl which we can now give,” he said in a statement.

“Carl was taken to hospital on Saturday afternoon where he was seen by medics. After assessment, it was discovered that Carl required 40 stitches to the injury and there was also extensive muscle damage around the eye which had to be repaired before the stitching procedure could begin. After treatment, Carl returned home and now faces a frustrating period on the sidelines.

“Everyone at the club would like to send their very best wishes to Bushy for his recovery; he will be missed between the sticks for sure and we can't wait to have him back at the club,” he added.
