GMP slam 'irresponsible, reckless and illegal' car meet after Ferraris and Lamborghinis block off roads

Police have branded a car meet in Stockport as 'irresponsible, reckless and illegal'.

Officers were called after 'hundreds' gathered at the car meet last night (Tuesday). Clips posted to Snap Maps showed high-end cars including Ferraris and Lamborghinis parading down roads around the Great Portwood Street area as people watched on.

Footage showed the vehicles parked up near the Peel Centre retail park and the Tesco supermarket while drivers revved the engines for onlookers. In one clip, dozens of people could be seen gathered near a police van, while in another, crowds gathered and filmed a person in the centre of the crowd.

Police said the car meet was initially 'moving around' Greater Manchester. It then headed to Stockport where officers followed.

Great Portwood Street had to be closed off as the incident unfolded, with drivers reporting gridlocked traffic in the surrounding areas. Police said cars were made to leave the area and some registration plate details were taken.

Videos of the 'car meet' were posted on Snap Maps (Snap Maps)

Superintendent John-Paul Ruffle said the meet was 'disruptive to local residents and put other road users at risk'. In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 8:20pm last night (25 October 2022), officers were called to reports of a large car meet that was moving around the force and causing numerous reports of anti-social behaviour.

"A co-ordinated response was put in place involving officers from Specialist Operations, Oldham, Tameside and City of Manchester Divisions. Officers were deployed to patrol previous locations used for car meets.

"The car meet was then followed to Stockport where disruptive action by the police resulted in the cars being made to disperse. The car registration details of those taking part were also recorded by officers."

Superintendent John-Paul Ruffle, of Greater Manchester Police Specialist Operations, said: "While the majority of car enthusiasts are passionate but law-abiding, this meet acted irresponsibly, recklessly and illegally. It was disruptive to local residents and also put other road users at risk.

"Greater Manchester Police will not let such behaviour go unchallenged and are prepared to take robust action where necessary, which can include seizing vehicles, issuing penalty notices and notifying insurance companies."

Youtuber and DJ 'DMO Deejay' shared clips to his Instagram story about the car meet last night. He posted several videos to his page about the 'link up', with one showing dozens of people gathered around him. The Manchester Evening News contacted him for a comment last night.
