Greater Manchester Police are investigating reports that suggested officers used 'pepper spray' in an attempt to dispel disorder between Preston and Wigan football fans following a derby match at the weekend.
Officers were called to the DW Stadium following the Wigan Athletic v Preston North End derby on Saturday (July 30).
Videos and images circulating online over the weekend have shown some fans chanting and screaming towards officers. Police at the game were dressed in protective gear and carrying batons.

Some fans on social media suggested officers had used 'pepper spray' to dispel the disorder. In one of the clips, some of the spectators could be seen stepping away whilst rubbing their eyes and coughing.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police told the M.E.N officers responded to a 'challenging situation' and would fully investigate the day’s operation. The claims that officers used 'pepper spray' during the incident could not be confirmed.
A GMP spokesperson said: “We are aware of a video showing our officers responding to some disorder between fans after the Wigan Athletic game against Preston North End. This clip is a snapshot of events and shows trained officers using tactics to manage a challenging situation.
“It is too early to know the full context at this time and – as with any event – it will be part of our wider debrief of the day’s operation.”
Anyone with information to share relating to the incident can contact police on 101 or via their website. Alternatively, information can be shared anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 11
