GMB slammed over John Barrowman interview as viewers question appearance

Good Morning Britain was met with a barrage of criticism after Richard Madeley interviewed John Barrowman on Tuesday morning's show.

Last year, allegations surfaced against the Scots born star that he allegedly exposed himself on the sets of BBC's Doctor Who and Torchwood.

The actor said cancel culture is like hyenas "trying to strip meat to the bone" after the ITV host questioned him about the allegations.

However, many viewers questioned why the former Dancing On Ice star was being interviewed on the show after being 'cancelled' for his on set behaviour.

GMB fans noticed presenter Richard Madeley took a harsher line of questioning than usual with the actor, as he dove straight into the elephant in the room.

Richard asked him: "A lot of people in this country would have assumed your career was over. When all the reports came out of this party trick you used to do, which is basically exposing yourself to colleagues which you thought was very funny at the time, and all this came out - and it would seem to many of us that that kind of sunk your career."

"And yet, here we are talking about brand new projects. How did you turn it around?"

John said: "I don't think it's me that has turned it around. The public understand that it was tomfoolery, that it was a joke and silliness and wasn't sexual harassment.

"And you say it was my party trick, but everybody who was there on set and part of the fun, all enjoyed and laughed about the silliness that went on...

He continued: "And also, you know, the cancelled culture. They've tried to strip my career over 35 years that I've worked very hard with and have a lot of fun. And I've been very open with all of the silliness that has went on.

"All the stories are nothing new. They've been out there for years. And I've written about them enough in my autobiography, but cancel culture are like hyenas that are trying to strip the meat off of a bone until there is nothing left and I'm over it and I have moved on. And I think everybody else has moved on and it's it's just cancelled culture has gone way too far.

"If I told all the secrets and the things that I know about the entertainment industry in years gone by, I can write one heck of a book I'll tell you, but that's not me. Because I know that is not now. That was then. This is now."

GMB viewers took to Twitter after the interview aired to vent their frustrations about the segment.

One user ranted: "John Barrowman on GMB today stating that it wasn’t indecent exposure/sexual harassment when he showed off his penis to work colleagues. It was ‘Tom foolery’ because everyone laughed along. Language doesn’t change the offence."

"John Barrowman excusing exposing himself and rubbing his Penis on fellow cast members as 'Tom Foolery', an act that would get you put in Prison anywhere but the BBC studios and Hollywood. As usual @GMB didn't put it up on Twitter as they knew there would be a backlash!!" another user tweeted.

Someone joked: "Richard Madeley starting a #GMB interview with on set flasher John Barrowman with the immortal lines "right let's address the elephant in the room. seriously has he got it out again"

" #gmb why is john Barrowman still being soft served in these interviews?? Its annoying how people pick &choose who to be outraged at," ranted another.

However, not all viewers agreed with the critics.

One fan praised Barrowman: " @GMB John Barrowman is a nice guy and a talented performer. What happened before was drawn well out of proportion. Still cannot understand why he was removed from Dancing on Ice. Class is permanent. All Star Musicals is just the beginning for him again."

Another tweeted: "Super interview. Never change. Always be "John Barrowman". Much love xx"

John Barrowman previously appeared on Lorraine in November 2021 and addressed the reports of 'flashing' on Doctor Who refuting the claims it was sexual harassment.

At the beginning of the interview, host Lorraine Kelly asked him: "Do you think on reflection that you may have crossed a line?"

John replied: "I think if it was now, it would be crossing the line. I think that something that happened 15 years ago, it was body behaviour, silly behaviour, it was being done in the confines of the set and we were like a family, working together.

"The fact that it was stories I've already told, I've been telling them for years, I haven't hidden anything, they've been exaggerated and they've tried to turn them into sexual harassment which it absolutely is not," he continued.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
