Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley has suggested that Prince Harry may not attend the coronation of King Charles III following the release of his tell-all memoir.
The coronation is to be held on Saturday 6 May, at Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace has announced.
The Queen Consort Camilla, will be alongside the king and will also be crowned in the historic ceremony.
The ITV morning programme discussed the upcoming coronation next year with former royal press secretary Ed Perkins and host Susanna Reid raised the question of whether the Sussexes will be expected in attendance as the King is anointed as sovereign.
Susanna said: “The coronation date is the one thing we know – Saturday, May 6. The other thing we know is that it is Harry and Meghan’s son Archie’s birthday.”
She asked: “Is there anything deliberate there? Is it to entice the whole family over to attend grandad’s coronation.”
Perkins said the choice of date was ‘either a clash or an opportunity’, noting: “They’ve got 365 days to choose from.”
He said: “My recollection when I was at the Palace was that people used to make an awful lot of clashes.
“The truth is it’s got to be held someday and there are dozens if not hundreds of national and royal events.”
Richard then weighed in, replying: “There’s this book Harry’s writing, which is likely to cause huge waves.
“You’ve got the whole Netflix documentary going ahead. Do you think they will even come?”
Perkins said he did not know whether they would visit the UK for the event, saying: “The idea that anyone at this stage understands whether Harry and Meghan will attend I would take with a great pinch of salt.”
Richard then came back suggesting: “If Harry’s dissed his father in the book, he’s not going to show up for the coronation, is he?”
Perkins said: “There’s seven months still to go. There’s a lot of water to run under the bridge. Opportunities may yet arise.”
This comes after This Morning host Holly Willoughby briefly defended Prince Harry ’s tell-all memoir amid reports he has sought to pull the plug on his book deal.
Discussing the memoir from the Duke of Sussex, Holly noted: “Any family member writing about another family without their permission is awkward.”
This Morning’s opinion guest replied: “I do think writing a book that promises to be a tell-all is going to be really bad for their family relations.”
Holly then replied: “Maybe it’s going to be very positive. Maybe we just don’t know,” to which the guest in the studio said: “Do you think they’re going to pay 40million for a very positive thing?”
Laughing, Holly insisted: “They might do. It’s interesting to know what his life is like anyway.”
