GMB's Laura Tobin warns of 'fatal' hot weather consequences as temperatures set to reach UK high

Good Morning Britain weather host Laura Tobin has made an alarming prediction for temperatures reaching an all time high for the UK next week, telling viewers at home there could be 'thousands of fatalities.

Meteorology expert Laura was back on screen and in front of the weather map as GMB came to an end for another week, joining lead presenters Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins and regular contributor Andi Peters in the studio, following reports that temperatures are set to soar as we head into next week.

And, while many people are delighted that more hot weather is on the cards, after a glorious few days of sunshine last week, Laura's Friday forecasts came with a rather grim warning. As Laura explained that there was the potential for areas of the UK to move from amber warning zones to red, temperatures as high as 38 degrees flashed up on the screen for London on Tuesday, with Birmingham at 37, while Newcastle considerably cooler with a predicted high of 24.

Much of the map south of Newcastle turned red as Laura spoke, with Cardiff on a predicted high of 33 and Hull at 32. But, while the scorching temperatures might cause excitement, particularly with the school summer holidays on the horizon, Laura's tone turned serious as she continued: "There is a 10% chance of 40 degrees Celsius. These temperatures, that potentially mean our amber warning, some people are wondering if it could go red, that would make a national emergency.

"And it means, not just the very vulnerable, everyone at every age category at risk of the extreme heat and there will be hundreds, if no thousands of fatalities due to this heatwave."

Later on in the show, Laura issued an update from the Met Office that there is a 60% chance that the UK's all time high temperature of 38.7 degrees could be broken, with a 20% chance of its climbing further to 40.
