GMB's Kate Garraway flustered after 'awkward' mispronunciation of activist guest's name

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway was left flustered on Friday’s show after a guest told her she 'wouldn't let her get away' with pronouncing her name wrong.

Activist Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu appeared remotely on the ITV programme to discuss cancel culture with Kate and her co-host Ben Shephard.

However, when Kate moved to introduce Dr Shola, she struggled to pronounce her surname Mos-Shogbamimu.

Kate tried to give it another go, saying: “Let me do that again,” before adding: “Dr Shola, you say your surname, because I’m useless this morning.”

The show turned to Shola in her home, but she was reluctant to ignore the surname blunder.

Shola said: “Read it phonetically. I’m not going to let you get away with that. Read it phonetically.”

Kate replied in the studio: “Okay, I’m going to give it a go.”

Shola clapped in response to her subsequent attempt and said well done.

Kate appeared flustered, saying: “By the way, I also stumble like that over Smith, so it’s nothing to do with anything else.

“I just struggle to get my words out most mornings.”

Good Morning Britain viewers were quick to take to Twitter to comment on the “awkward” interaction between the two, with one describing it as “excruciating”.

One said: “Poor Kate #GMB” with a crying laughing emoji, while another said: “OOh. Ouch. Awkward, Kate.”

A third tweeted: “Oh mate. Cringe. How can you ask a guest to say their own surname? #GMB”

Another social media user wrote: “Haha she’s having a mare this morning #GMB”

A number of viewers praised Dr Shola’s response, with one saying: “I’m glad she did that and stood her ground - you better try to pronounce her name sis! #gmb #goodmorningbritain”

Kate went on to ask Dr Shola about the modern form of ostracism dubbed cancel culture, or call-out culture.

She said: “Is there an argument to say that part of growing up, growing older is that your views get informed and changed - something you said in the past may not represent you now, so therefore you should be forgiven for holding those views if you’ve changed your mind?”

Dr Shola replied: “Expressions of hate are not a product of any given time - they are past, present and future.

“Forgiveness is good, but forgiveness does not absolve you of consequences. The person who suffers the real consequences is the person who is targeted by that remark or that action.”
