GMB's Kate Garraway emotional as Robert Rinder praises 'amazing' friend after NTA news

Good Morning Britain host Robert Rinder told Kate Garraway he was "proud" of her on Tuesday's show, after her National Television Awards 2022 nomination.

He appeared emotional and almost made Kate cry, as he praised her and her "amazing" documentary Caring For Derek, which has been shortlisted for an award.

A year on from her winning an NTA for the first documentary, Finding Derek, Kate's follow-up doc is now nominated in the same category.

Kate's documentaries follow life for her and her family, following her husband Derek Draper's serious health battle after he contracted Covid-19 in March 2020.

Speaking on GMB on Tuesday, Robert wasted no time in applauding Kate as he praised her as "sunshine in human form".

Kate had told him: "It's the first time I've worked with you, it's so exciting." Robert then went on: "You know what, it is! First of all, you are sunshine in human form, and to be alongside a friend.

"We don't really talk about it that much. I just want to say more than anything else, you are a model of the possibility against a backdrop of darkness of being light in every sense. I also want to say, I'm gonna use language my grandmother would use, I am kvelling, I am so proud of you today.

"Your amazing documentary Caring For Derek is being shortlisted for a National Television Award, and to use the platform you have for change, for authenticity just makes me proud to know you. I'm not gonna cry but I am just very proud." A shocked and moved Kate told him: "That's so lovely! I'm gonna cry myself!"

Kate also took the moment to praise her fellow nominees in her category, but added she was happy her own doc was able to "shine some light" on the care system. Former political advisor Derek is said to be the worst affected living Covid patient in the UK after spending 13 months in hospital.

After months in a coma, Derek faced serious illness due to the impact of the virus on his body including issues with his lungs, his heart and his kidneys. Recently, Kate confirmed her husband had been rushed back into hospital leading to her taking time off the show and other work commitments.

The host admitted he took an "unexpected and frightening turn for the worse" that left her with no choice but to put her work commitments on hold. Kate said her husband was finally "back on the right side of it" in an update in July, as she returned to work after three weeks off.

She wrote: "Thank you so so much for all your messages of support - they really do mean the world to me & the whole family. "I have taken some time off @gmb, @smoothradio & @garrawaysgoodatuff in the last 3 weeks as Derek’s health took an unexpected & frightening turn for the worse that landed him back in intensive care & fighting for his life - again."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
