- General Motors teases its new 8.3-liter Duramax V8 turbo-diesel engine.
- It’s called the Mongoose, a name that aims at Ford’s “Scorpion” 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8.
- GM has not released specs, but they should surpass Ford’s 500 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque.
General Motors is preparing to update its heavy-duty pickups for the 2027 model year. When they go on sale, the automaker will offer a new diesel engine: They call it the Mongoose.
The teaser reveals it is an 8.3-liter Duramax V8 turbo-diesel engine. The automaker stopped short of providing any details about the new powertrain, so we will have to wait for output, payload, and towing specs, but GM is clearly aiming for its rival Ford.
The short teaser tells a story about a mongoose and a scorpion and shows only a glimpse of the engine’s logo. That seems strange until you realize "Scorpion” is Ford’s internal codename for its 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel that powers its heavy-duty pickups.
The new Duramax diesel engine will launch in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, which could debut before year's end. The new Mongoose will replace GM’s current 6.6-liter Duramax V8, which produces 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque.
The Competition
While GM hasn’t revealed the engine’s specs, they should match or surpass Ford’s Power Stroke. The Blue Oval’s diesel engine makes 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.
If GM’s new Mongoose cranks out more power than Ford’s, it will also beat Ram’s 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six diesel. It develops 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft.
In addition to the new powertrain, GM’s heavy-duty trucks will also receive new styling. The trucks should borrow cues from the 2027 Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra1500.
Motor1’s Take: Right now might not be the best time for a new, beastly diesel engine with prices so high, but heavy-duty trucks aren’t for typical commuters. They are designed to get work done, and GM’s new V8 should attract those kinds of customers.
