Gloucestershire Airport has announced a flagship commercial development at its site has reached a “critical delivery milestone".
The airport, located in Staverton, said it is planning a 30,000 sqm scheme which could be occupied by businesses operating in the “logistics and industry sectors” and could create up to 1,500 jobs.
Gloucestershire LEP GFirst has provided £1.88m in growth deal funding to support the infrastructure work for the project.
Montel Civil Engineering, instructed by local project management firm Vitruvius Management Services, has now delivered a new entrance for the project, known as CGX Connect.
The contractor has completed improvement works on access to the site, alongside enabling works to clear and the construction of pedestrian refuges, new streetlights, signage and road markings.
Karen Taylor, managing director of Gloucestershire Airport, described the work as a “significant” step toward delivering the final scheme.
She added the project has already attracted “strong interest” from businesses in the county and the wider area, as well as those with national operations.
Ms Taylor said: “Now that there’s vehicular access to the site, we expect things to move quickly. Before now no one could access the site to build. This access road will unlock future development and brings us one step closer to realising a landmark development with the potential to unlock so much growth for the region.”
Alongside CGX Connect, work is also underway to upgrade the airport’s runways, including resurfacing the main runway, installation of new lighting and underground infrastructure, as well as improved signage and drainage. Completion is scheduled for this summer.
Ms Taylor added: “These are transformational times for Gloucestershire Airport. CGX Connect, along with ongoing work to upgrade the airport’s runways, will elevate the quality and status of the airport as a ‘gateway for growth’ for the many significant developments being brought forward across the region.”
