The International Monetary Fund on Wednesday urged governments worldwide to urgently rein in public spending, narrow budget deficits and reduce debt, warning that delaying fiscal adjustments would make them increasingly painful as borrowing costs rise.
Global public debt was on track to reach 100% of gross domestic product, its highest level since World War Two, leaving governments with limited room to respond to future economic shocks, the IMF said.
