Global Market: European markets gain as investors assess impact of Iran sanctions

European shares edged higher on Tuesday as investors assessed the latest U.S. sanctions against Iran and drew some relief from the absence of immediate penalties, while gains in defence stocks supported broader market sentiment, Reuters reported.

The pan-European STOXX 600 rose 0.3% to 656.14 as of 0718 GMT, with defence stocks leading sectoral gains, advancing about 1%. According to Reuters, investors were encouraged by the relatively measured implementation of the latest U.S. measures against Iran.

The Trump administration on Monday warned countries to reduce business ties with Iran or face secondary sanctions as part of an intensified economic pressure campaign. However, the U.S. Treasury Department did not immediately impose penalties, easing concerns about an abrupt disruption to global trade and energy supplies.

Oil prices extended their decline as markets assessed the sanctions as posing limited near-term risks to crude supplies. Iran has pledged to retaliate against the expanded U.S. measures and expressed confidence that key trading partners would resist pressure from Washington, Reuters reported.

The easing in oil prices also helped improve the broader market backdrop, particularly as investors remained focused on inflation and interest-rate expectations. U.S. Treasury yields meanwhile pulled back from recent highs following reports that the Treasury could use its cash reserves to finance larger debt buybacks. Such a move could reduce the need for additional short-term bill issuance.

European technology stocks gained 0.3%, with attention turning to Nvidia's quarterly results due on Wednesday. Investors are closely watching whether the chipmaker can deliver results strong enough to justify elevated market expectations surrounding artificial intelligence-related spending.

Defence stocks remained among the strongest performers as geopolitical tensions continued to underpin demand expectations for military equipment and services. Overall, European equities remained supported by easing concerns over an immediate energy shock, although investors continued to monitor developments surrounding Iran and the broader impact of U.S. sanctions.
