Glider and Metro buses attacked with bricks in West Belfast

A Glider and two Metro buses were attacked with bricks and stones during multiple incidents in West Belfast.

Police were called to the Stewartstown Road on Monday evening following reports that a number of vehicles had been damaged in the area.

There were reports that youths with bricks and stones were seen close to the Bell Steel Road junction.

As a result of the attacks, Metro services 10c and 10d were diverted from their route and the Glider operated to Colin Connect in order to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

A Translink spokesperson said: “Damage was caused to a Glider and two Metro buses on the Stewartstown Road on Monday evening, February 7.

“For the safety of our staff and passengers, Glider services operated to Colin Connect for the rest of the evening and Metro 10c and 10d services operated a route diversion.

“Full service was restored this Tuesday morning.

“The safety of our customers, staff and the wider public is our top priority at all times. We have zero tolerance for attacks on our vehicles and we work closely with the PSNI, community and elected representatives to reduce and prevent acts of vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

“We operate a cash reward scheme offering up to £1,000 to any member of the public who witnesses any incident and is prepared to give evidence in court, resulting in a conviction.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: "West Belfast neighbourhood policing team in the Colin area unfortunately had to deal with further reports of damage caused to a Glider at around 8 :15pm on Monday evening on Stewartstown Road close to the new park area.

"Two metro buses were also attacked at the same location

"Youths with bricks and stones were observed at the Bell Steel Road junction.

"These attacks are senseless and put people at risk of severe injury.

"The service was temporarily restricted for the safety of the public.
