Glentoran boss Mick McDermott played down his team’s exceptional start to the season as they took their unbeaten run to nine games following last night’s emphatic BetMcLean League Cup win over Warrenpoint Town at the Oval.
Goals from Conor McMenamin, skipper Marcus Kane, Jay Donnelly, Paddy McClean (2) and substitute Kirk McLaughlin ensured it was another good night at the office for McDermott’s boys, who marched into round three of the competition without ever going through the gears.
“It was a sound, professional job,” purred the boss. “Even though Warrenpoint are a Championship side, we had to show them the respect they deserve.

“Some of our finishing was good and we’ve made a decent start, but we’re not becoming carried away. We are only a few games into the new season, there is a long way to go.
"I’m sure there will be some twists and turns up ahead.”
McMenamin hit the opener on 19 minutes, curling home a beauty from the edge of the box. It was two 90 seconds later. Hrvoje Plum’s corner kick was met by Kane, who bulleted his header home.
Donnelly then capitalised on an error from Jonathen Leddy to poke home the third two minutes before the interval.
McClean hit a second half double, both booming headers, sandwiched in between McLaughlin’s first goal for the club.
