Glenafton call-off has East Kilbride Thistle facing hectic spring as games mount up

Alan Paterson is preparing for East Kilbride Thistle to have a hectic spring after Saturday’s cup clash with Glenafton Athletic was added to their list of postponed matches this season.

The Jags moved the West of Scotland League Cup second round clash to the artificial surface at K-Park in a bid to get the game on, but heavy snow last week meant it didn’t pass a 10am inspection.

Paterson and co-boss Russell Craig now have several matches outstanding with March on the horizon and the former said: “Saturday was a bit of a nightmare because it’s another game we need to catch up on.

“I think it’s going to a busy spring with all the games we need to fit in. We are about six games behind some teams in the league, plus there’s cup games so we’ll need our full squad.

“The games will be coming thick and fast eventually.

“K-Park was absolutely covered in snow on Friday and it didn’t thaw enough for the 10am inspection on Saturday morning.

"By 3pm it was okay but we had to make the call at that time in the morning because they [Glenafton] were travelling from Ayrshire. There’s not much we can do.”

Thistle now move on to an away clash with fifth-place St Anthony’s in West of Scotland League Conference C this weekend and Paterson is hoping to keep the good run going against Ants.

His side won 3-1 at McKenna Park in round one of the WOSL Cup in December, while Thistle also won 2-0 in a league meeting in September.

“We’ve played Ants twice and the scoreline has maybe flattered us in the games,” admitted Paterson, whose side are 12th in the table. ”The two teams are quite evenly matched so it should be a good game.

“We actually just lost one of our goalkeepers, Bailey McGuire, to St Anthony’s a couple of weeks ago.

"They have got a good chance of moving up the leagues so the boy wanted to go and test himself there.

“The only plus side from last week is we get more time to get the injured boys back and we’d have been without Matt Gray who was at a wedding.”
