Glen Powell and David Weil are taking Prime Video straight to Texas. Their new thriller project just got a straight to series order.
Prime Video’s Calamities sees David Weil back in the producer’s chair alongside Powell. Natalie Laine Williams is also executive producing according to Deadline. Dan Cohen is teamed with the Running Man star under the Barnstorm banner. Ryan Schwartz is also a co-executive producer. Here’s what Prime Video has to say about the show.
“Calamities is a gripping and propulsive Texas crime thriller like no other. After a drug deal explodes into violence, a quiet border town is thrust into a deadly collision course between a small-town sheriff looking for answers from her past, a sociopathic hit woman, an overly eager FBI agent, and a ruthless sect of the cartel.”
All that sounds really exciting. Lord knows that thrillers are having a moment on both streaming TV and broadcast right now. Calamities seems like a novel approach to draw folks into the genre. Of course, with Texas popping up more and more in popular media these days, having Powell in the fold will help that effort. The guy just seems to get it when it comes to selecting roles.
Weil has been on a hot streak with Prime Video as of late. His series, Hunters, joins Citadel as the latest big-name project for the streaming service. The producer has been staying busy too. He wrote on the recently-announced Extraction 3 for Netflix. And, don’t forget about Invasion over on Apple TV. A big year for Glen Powell fans rolls on.
Glen Powell’s new series takes things to Texas

Amazon MGM Studios is excited to have the star in the fold for this one. “Calamities is the unique character-rich thriller that doesn’t blink,” Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios told Deadline. “David Weil has crafted a story that knocks the wind out of you, and we’re beyond excited to support him, Natalie, Glen Powell, and Dan in bringing it to life on Prime.”
Our favorite man’s been getting out on his dreams in a major way. Project after project. Finding different audiences and appealing to them. Whether that means he’s a fox flying a spaceship or a man trying to get revenge against those who did his family wrong. Previously, he talked to Empire Magazine about what makes his brand of everyman heroes so appealing to audiences.
“I just don’t identify with people with superpowers for the most part,” Powell explained. “I like the ordinary guy against extraordinary odds. The entire world is hunting this man, trying to kill him. Can he survive? Can he save his family? That’s a great, simple story.”
You can bet Calamities will focus on a guy with a similar disposition. There’s a massive mystery to get to the bottom of, and he’s the man for the job. You can count on Glenn Powell’s charming self to be right in the thick of things. Now, can we get a release date already?
