Glastonbury Festival: Fans divided over Sir Paul McCartney playing video of Johnny Depp

Opinion is split after rock royalty Sir Paul McCartney played a video of Johnny Depp as he headlined Glastonbury Festival last night. The former Beatle, 80, illustrated his song My Valentine using a clip of the actor using sign language on a screen.

Johnny recently won his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard. He was featured in the 2012 music video for My Valentine alongside actress Natalie Portman, 41, and Sir Paul's choice to use the clip at Glastonbury divided opinion among music fans.

The clip features Natalie lip-syncing to the music while Johnny strums an acoustic guitar. It was streamed on the big screens at Worthy Farm as well as on the BBC, Express reports.

The footage was used recently by Macca in his recent US Get Back tour. That was while the Pirates Of The Caribbean star was in the midst of his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard which he later won.

Macca - now the oldest performer to play Glastonbury - did not address Johnny's $100million court case against Amber directly during the concert. But as soon as the images of the actor appeared on stage, the crowd cheered.

The use of the clip divided the opinion of viewers who were watching Sir Paul's performance on BBC One from home. Here's what some said:

Taking to Twitter to praise the musician - who celebrated his 80th birthday on 18 June - for using the clip, one fan wrote: 'Happy Birthday Sir Paul, hope it was a blessed and wonderful day and thank you for supporting fellow survivor Johnny Depp.'

Another viewer at home wrote: '#PaulMcCartney played a video of #JohnnyDepp during his set tonight headlining at Glastonbury thank you #JOHNNYDEPPWINS.'

While someone else shared: '#johnnydepp signing on massive screens to #PaulMcCartney singing at #Glastonbury was everything.'

One other person tweeted: 'A mediocre day at Glastonbury until Paul McCartney - fantastic.'

And one other devotee posted: 'Aaah I love 'My Valentine' and I'm glad gorgeous Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman are being shown on the screens from the video! #Glastonbury2022 #PaulMcCartney.'

However, the use of the clip of Johnny in the My Valentine video during Glastonbury did not go down well with everyone, with one person writing: 'I'm so sad that a man like Paul McCartney has chosen to give Johnny Depp a platform.'

One upset viewer tweeted: 'I love Paul McCartney but so deeply disappointed he showed the Johnny Depp footage. It's shameful.'

Someone else posted: 'Deeply disappointed in both @PaulMcCartney and @glastonbury for the Johnny Depp video. Feels like it goes against everything Glastonbury stands for.'

Someone else posted: 'Paul McCartney playing a video of Johnny Depp at Glastonbury in the background feels like a pointed choice.'

While another viewer wrote: 'Did Paul McCartney really have a massive on-screen Johnny Depp during his previous tune? Ay caramba, everyone involved.'

Johnny Depp has recently won a libel case against his ex-partner, Amber Heard, after she wrote in the Washington Post a piece about being the victim of domestic abuse. During another libel trial, this time in the UK, Depp lost his case against the Sun, who called him a 'wife beater' after the judge ruled there was enough evidence for the paper to make the accusations.

Mr Depp sued the paper after it claimed he assaulted his ex-wife Amber Heard, which he denies. The Sun said the article was accurate. Judge Mr Justice Nicol said the Sun had proved what was in the article to be "substantially true".
