Glasgow could be hit by 80mph winds as Storm Otto makes its way to Scotland

It's finally close to the weekend, but before we step into Saturday, a yellow weather warning has been issued for much of Scotland across Friday.

According to the forecasters, "a spell of strong winds" are set to impact the majority of the country and as a result, it could "bring some disruption" for the whole day with the winds now "associated with Storm Otto."

The storm is originating in Denmark and was named by the Denmark Metrological institute, and not the Met Office in the UK.

Due to the strong winds, there is said to be a "small chance of injuries and danger to life" due to flying debris and as well as this, there may also be a "slight chance of some damage to buildings" such as tiles blown from roofs.

But with another warning in place for wind, what can Scotland and specifically Glasgow expect? Here is what you need to know.

When is Glasgow's Met Office yellow weather warning?

From 5am on Friday (February 17) Glasgow along with the rest of Scotland can expect the strong winds to last until 3pm the same day.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for wind. (Met Office)

How strong will the winds be?

The Met Office issued an update explaining: "A spell of very strong winds is expected to affect Scotland during Friday morning, easing from the west during the afternoon. Gusts of 60-70 mph are likely, and possibly as high as 80 mph for exposed coasts and hills, particularly for the far north and northeast of mainland Scotland and Orkney."

How will Storm Otto impact Scotland?

A low-pressure system which will bring high winds and rain to parts of the UK has been named Storm Otto by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI).

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said: “Storm Otto will bring high winds and rain to the UK, with some northern parts of Scotland and the northeast of England likely to get the strongest gusts of wind, possibly in excess of 75mph. Warnings have been issued and could be updated as Storm Otto develops.

“There’s a chance of travel disruption and high-sided vehicles could be particularly prone to disrupted plans in this set-up. There’s associated rain with Storm Otto, with 40-50 mm of rain likely to fall over parts of western Scotland.”

Glasgow's Met Office yellow weather warning - what to expect

According to the Met Office locals in Glasgow should expect the following:

  • There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris
  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected. High-sided vehicles may be particularly prone in this set-up.
  • There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
