Glasgow Warriors v Cardiff team news as Faletau left out and young midfield giants team up

Cardiff hand a first start of the season to James Ratti for the trip to Scotland to face Glasgow Warriors at Scotstoun on Friday evening (7.35).

Taulupe Faletau is left out with the club declaring the Wales international and star summer signing’s game time is being managed.

There are two further changes from the side that defeated Munster, seeing Matthew Morgan come in at full-back for Liam Williams, who could be out for up to 16 weeks with a collarbone injury, and Mason Grady take over from Rey Lee-Lo.

Faletau started his Cardiff career with a bang last weekend after his summer move from Bath, with his man-of-the-match display widely acclaimed, featuring as it did a try, 17 carries, 11 tackles, six defenders beaten, a final-seconds turnover, 66 metres made and 53 metres achieved from kicks.

Ratti brought his own qualities to the table in a fine season for Dai Young’s team last term, which helped secure him a Wales squad place. He remains uncapped, though, and will want to put down an marker for the season.

Morgan will want to do the same, while Grady, so impressive for Wales in the U20 Summer series, teams up with Max Llewellyn in a youthful midfield partnership that may be light on experience but isn’t shy on potential or size, with both standing 6ft 5in and bringing a combined weight of almost 34st to the back line.

Cardiff are yet to taste league victory at Scotstoun but will be buoyed by their 32-28 victory, the last time the sides met, while Glasgow have since fallen to five consecutive defeats.

Cardiff director of rugby, Dai Young, said: “We have made a few changes, either due to injury or to look after players who are a bit battered and bruised following a big effort last week. It’s important to manage these guys to ensure we get plenty from them through the season, and we have some quality coming in to replace them.

“We haven’t done well away and that is something we have to put right quickly. There were a lot of good things on the weekend, and if we can build on them then there’s no reason why we can’t be in with a chance of getting a result here.

“It’s Glasgow’s first home game in a while, under a new coach as well, but last week didn’t go to plan. So they’ll be desperate to get a performance in and get their season up-and-running.

“We know they’re a quality team, and listening to some of the talk after the game, they were more pleased with the second half than they were with the first.

“In the second half they demonstrated that they’re a team who want to play rugby from all areas of the pitch, and that’s what we expect.

“We’re going to have to be on our toes defensively right across the pitch because they’ll look to attack from anywhere and really take us on.”

Keiron Assiratti and Brad Thyer are both drafted onto the bench, while the likes of Lopeti Timani, Rhys Priestland and Uilisi Halaholo will be looking to pick up where they left off last week, having caught the eye as replacements against Munster.

Glasgow start with the hard-running Sione Tuipulotu in midfield, with brothers Zander and Matt Fagerson featuring in a strong pack that also contains Rory Darge, Richie Gray and Fraser Brown.

Glasgow Warriors: Cole Forbes, Sebastian Cancelliere, Sione Tuipulotu, Stafford McDowall, Kyle Steyn (CAPT), Tom Jordan, George Horne; Jamie Bhatti, Fraser Brown, Zander Fagerson, Scott Cummings, Richie Gray, Matt Fagerson, Rory Darge, Jack Dempsey
