Glasgow theatre issues message to audiences in bid to curb anti-social behaviour

A Glasgow theatre has been forced to issue a message to customers in a bid to curb anti-social behaviour during performances.

The King's Theatre shared a message on social media urging audience members to 'be kind' to staff and fellow audience members ahead of the current run of The Bodyguard shows.

The much-anticipated musical featuring the songs of Whitney Houston began a stint at the theatre on January 28 with audience members reporting people trying to 'outsing' the actors and 'chatting' during the show.

A strongly-worded message asking the audience to show consideration has been shared twice by the theatre.

It outlines: "We're really excited about welcoming you to The Bodyguard, where we want everyone to enjoy the show.

"With that in mind, we politely ask that you show consideration to your fellow audience members, who have come to enjoy performances on stage.

"We all have a part to play in making sure the theatre is a fantastic experience for everyone and you can help by ensuring the professionals on stage are the only people entertaining us with their performances, and by being kind to our dedicated staff who are here to make sure everybody is safe.

"Anti-social behaviour towards our staff or other customers will not be tolerated."

One post on the issue has received over 1,000 likes in a matter of days with hundreds of people taking to the comments to complain, with many sharing their own negative experiences.

One person wrote: "Recently visited this performance, it was ridiculous how inappropriate fully grown adults were behaving. Actively trying to outsing the professional actors. It was such a shame and I felt terrible for the on-stage professionals being wolf-whistled and boo-ed every 2nd scene."

Another added: "I was there last night and was quite disappointed at the behaviour of many people around me. If people want to drink and chat loudly go to the pub not the theatre."

One audience member added: "Sadly tonight this did not happen! There were people being loud, singing along when they shouldn’t have been, and getting up and down all the time. The thing that was a bit confusing though is why the staff removed a customer to let her back in and then have to remove her again but properly. Also, the show was still going at a moment that was very quiet/intense and you could hear the woman shouting in the stairs. So should have been removed then, not aloud back in."

Another said: "Worst show ever at the Theatre Royal last time it was here due to endless drunk women singing, passing out, going to the toilet, fighting with each other...it was never-ending. Stay at home with your Buckie Bottle and listen to Whitney if you can't behave and just enjoy it like normal people."

While one person commented: "We were there opening night. A crowd of unruly and tipsy women spoiled first half by chatting all through. We paid money to see a musical not listen to chat."

Another said: "It’s totally shocking how people are behaving at the theatre recently! The lack of respect for not just the rest of the audience but the actors on stage is shocking."

The Bodyguard will end its run in Glasgow on Saturday, February 4.
