A huge Glasgow supermarket will close permanently this spring, it has been announced.
We've previously reported on the Tesco Extra store at Parkhead facing closure, which would represent a devastating blow for the east end of the city.
Last summer news broke the supermarket giant had served notice on their lease, which had 12 months to run, after failing to agree a deal with the landlord.
Today it's been confirmed the store will close its doors for the very last time on April 30.
Tesco say they cannot rule out redundancies, however they will look to redeploy staff where they can.
A Tesco spokesperson confirmed: “We have taken the difficult decision to close our Glasgow Parkhead store.
"Despite our best efforts, we’ve been unable to agree a sustainable future for the store with the landlord.
"Our priority is to support affected colleagues and, where possible, we will work hard to find alternative roles for those who wish to stay with us."
Glasgow Live have contacted landlord Forge Retail Park Unit Trust for comment.
When reports of a potential closure surfaced in July 2021, Labour & Co-op MSP for the Glasgow Region Paul Sweeney said the store has been 'loss-making' and that negotiations with the landlord of the site had thus far proved unsuccessful, sparking fears over jobs.
He said on Twitter: "More bad news for Glasgow's East End today as Tesco announce the closure of their Parkhead store in a year's time due to it being loss making.
"Tesco have attempted to negotiate a smaller floorspace but the landlord won't agree.
"I have offered my assistance in these discussions."
