Glasgow support worker sent someone else to do shift and pretend to be her

A Glasgow support worker sent someone else to work her shift and pretend to be her.

Marie Gweth had been assigned a shift by SRS Care Solutions Ltd in August 2020 while employed as a support worker when she carried out the deception.

She arranged for an unknown person to attend her shift and pretend to be her. Nothing is known about who the individual was and whether she was allowed to work with vulnerable people. Luckily the shift was a 'double up' so there was another qualified worker there too.

Gweth was reported to the Scottish Social Services Council which concluded that her behaviour was 'extremely serious'.

A report on the matter detailed: "Nothing is known about this individual, including whether or not she had been subject to the usual disclosure checks that workers need to undergo before being allowed to work with vulnerable people. You showed a complete disregard for the systems that are in place to ensure safe recruitment practices, and the system of professional regulation.

"It would appear that the unknown individual was not a trained carer, meaning service users could have been placed at risk of serious harm had she attempted to carry out manual handling procedures or administer medicine. Had there been any sort of emergency situation it is unlikely this individual would have been equipped to deal with it.

"It also amounts to a failure to treat the service users with respect, as they have a right to expect that the people who are being allowed into their homes are properly vetted and properly trained workers."

The panel found that Gweth's fitness to practise is impaired but that she should be allowed to continue working in the sector. A warning was placed on her registration for 48 months.

The report explained that the support worker has shown 'insight and remorse' for her behaviour and that no further concerns about her conduct have been raised in the two years since.
