Glasgow 'summer icks' as city 'smells like a cooked bin' according to viral TikTok

Scottish summer is well and truly here. We've had weeks of glorious sunshine without a drop of rain in sight followed by the complete opposite with nothing but rain.

Just this week, on June 20, six days worth of rain fell in an hour during the Euro 2024 qualifier at Hampden as Scotland faced off against Georgia. And if the six days wasn't enough to show how bad it was, play was suspended for more than 90 minutes after torrential rain flooded the pitch.

Glasgow's weather is thankfully set to pick up again however and whilst we're praying we get a dry day or two with no rainfall before the end of July, there's some icks that kind of make us wish we had stayed inside or soaked up the sun elsewhere.

And we're not alone with one Glasgow-based specialist social media marketing agency having their say on the matter.

Often going viral on TikTok, We Are Hydrogen interviews their staff in their Glasgow office as they have their say on what matters be it the best restaurants in Glasgow, Scottish delicacies and something we all do but don't admit to, have songs that we cry to.

But one video doing the rounds with almost 20k views is about their Scottish 'summer icks' - and with one of their most viral TikToks about 'office icks' gaining 1.2 million views - it's safe to say we could scroll though all their videos to hear their opinions on just about any subject.

For those who are unfamiliar, an 'ick' is a slang term commonly used to describe a feeling of disgust or aversion towards something or someone that can put you off them or said thing. It is a trend that often goes viral on the video sharing app and often done in a joking and exaggerated way for a bit of humour.

When asked about their icks, here's what they had to say:

  • Gav: Not having a back garden
  • Rachelle: Thinking it's gonna be nice to go and sit up by the steps on Buchanan Street up at the very top and actually they're just covered in bird s***e, everyone's yelling, it's loud, it's sunny, it's noisy, it's not a good time
  • Simi: Being on the bus in hot weather and just having the windows open but no AC - and then the bus just doesn't move fast enough for any wind to come through...it's like go, stop, go, stop, go, stop
  • Ciara: Guys that come out in shorts and taps aff when its 12C outside
  • Fiona: When the weather forecast is like 20C + and you dress in a nice wee dress ready for the sun and then it's absolutely freezing because 20C in Scotland is not 20C elsewhere
  • Josh: How the council aren't really prepared for Scottish summer so the whole city just smells like a cooked bin for a couple of weeks

With over five thousand followers and nearly 200k combined likes, people were quick to tell their own icks with one replying: when you see guys driving about with their tops off

Another said: "Cooked bin is legit the truth."

"Sandals!" said a third.
