Glasgow Subway and ScotRail services off this weekend as public urged to plan ahead

Glasgow is set for a weekend of disrupted public transport with Subway and train services off.

ScotRail customers have been warned to expect significant disruption during the latest strike action by Network Rail staff which will take place on Saturday (November 5). The vast majority of services will be unable to run due to safety-critical workers taking part in the action.

Disruption will roll over into Sunday (November 6) due to the reopening of signal boxes at different times across the country. It's likely that services in the Central Belt will start running much later in the day than normal.

Subway services will also be off on Sunday to help facilitate modernisation works..

A free shuttle bus service will be running between Partick and Govan only during operating hours at Stance 1 in Govan and stance 2 in Partick.

A Subway spokesperson said: "These short closures will allow our contractor teams to work intensively on the efficient and safe installation of cabling and equipment within the Subway tunnels. It is also expected that a number of closures will also follow early in 2023.

"This additional time the closures give the Subway Joint Venture (JV), contracted to deliver the Subway modernisation programme, will progress the installation of our new signalling and communication systems for the new trains. This work involves laying cables between stations and then mounting them onto brackets within the tunnels.

"The closures will also give the JV the opportunity to progress initial civil works required to strengthen our station platforms to enable the installation of Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) at a later date."

David Simpson, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, commented: "Once again, it’s really disappointing to see the dispute between Network Rail and the RMT result in more widespread disruption across the whole Great Britain rail network at a time when we need to be encouraging more people back to the railway.

“For ScotRail, it’s going to mean that we won’t be able to operate the vast majority of our services, which we know will be really frustrating for our customers.

“ScotRail customers should expect significant disruption to services on strike days, as well as on the days after industrial action.

“We’re advising customers to seek alternative means of transport and to only travel if you really need to on the days of strike action. Customers should check your journey in advance to make sure your train is running if you’re travelling on one of the days following strike action.”
