Glasgow singer Kenny Lee Roberts on releasing second album and why charity is close to his heart

A Glasgow-based singer has followed up a packed 2022, which included a headline show at King Tut’s, with the release of an exciting new album.

On sale now, No Talc On The Dance Floor sees singer-songwriter Kenny Lee Roberts shine with his own style that fuses Americana, Northern Soul and whatever else takes his fancy.

The Glasgow native made music as a youngster but life got in the way, but explained that he’s returned to it purely for the sheer love of writing, recording, singing and performing.

Achieving a lot over the last year, the star's performances included a packed headline show at King Tut’s, supports at Saint Luke’s and a unique show at Hidden lane Brewery – which sparked the idea of making his own beer, selling it and donating all of the income to Homeless Project Scotland, a charity close to his heart.

Kenny said: “I have written songs and recorded in studios for many years so I was very comfortable with this, but it had been a while since I had played live and there were more than a few nerves knocking around when I got back out there.

"I started off with some smaller shows to get back in the saddle and gradually built up to bigger audiences with the band growing to the full six-piece group for shows today. Tut’s was, of course, a dream fulfilled. I’m still waiting for the name on the stairs though!”

With a very special show at McChuills lined up in May to continue his work with Homeless Project Scotland, there’s much more to Kenny than great tunes – he's also keen on charity work and helping others.

He said: “I was always brought up being taught to try and 'pay forwards' whenever you can so Hardwired Lager was a great opportunity to do just that for a great cause.

"I played an intimate gig at the Hidden Lane Brewery last year and this was the seed for the idea that then evolved into producing my own brand of lager to sell on, giving all the money to the homeless charity to carry on their good work.

"I got the easy bit, played some tunes, made and drank some beer and then promoted it, the charity does all the day-to-day graft and serious hard work to look after so many people.”

As well as the album, there’s a video dropping this Friday for crowd favourite Giving It Travolta. The song – about a has-been or never-was clinging on to days gone by – has been brought to life by a couple of former football stars.

Meanwhile, Kenny is already hard at work on the next album – which he plans to unleash on us around the end of this summer.

“Whilst the first album Exactly Different was an eclectic bunch of tunes and styles, this second album was far more focused on a particular style and songs that would both blend well together and also translate well to the live set.

“I am always working on new tunes for myself and other artists so album three is already written and we have actually started recording the tracks, so that should be ready to go after the summer.”

Kenny Lee Roberts’ No Talc On The Dance Floor is on sale now.
