Glasgow's Shettleston mural to be restored thanks to local community fund

More than £6000 in funding is to be awarded to a community organisation who want to revamp St Mark’s mural in Shettleston.

The mural was originally created as a response to the ongoing gang and drug problems that were evident in the area while celebrating the lives of those lost to antisocial behaviour.

At Thursday’s area partnership meeting, members approved funding of £6434 to Impact Arts who will regenerate the mural which has fallen into a poor state of repair, been vandalised and has lost the community connection it once had.

This project, delivered in partnership with SHA & Fuse, seeks to reverse this decline and hopes to bring together young people to re-imagine it.

An application was presented to members of the Shettleston Area Partnership on Thursday afternoon.

A council spokeswoman said: “Impact Arts are requesting funding because there has been an increase in anti social behaviour and vandalism against the mural that is already there.

“They are working in partnership with Shettleston Housing Association and are hoping to bring young people and the local community together to redesign and redevelop the mural.

“There is a breakdown of costs. They would be looking to do consultations and have workshops which would be phase one of the project.

“The recommendation is to approve £6434 which is the amount requested. Phase two of the project will take place in the new financial year and they are looking for current sources of funding for that.”

Members of the partnership agreed to the recommendation presented to them.
