Glasgow's historic Art Deco facade of Marks and Spencer on Sauchiehall Street saved from demolition

The historic facade of a former Marks and Spencer store on Sauchiehall Street is to be retained as part of a new development.

Calls had been made for the 1930s Art Deco frontage to be saved after demolition plans were submitted last year.

Fusion Students are looking to build student accommodation for around 600 residents with shops on the ground floor in place of the popular supermarket.

Paul Sweeney MSP and Historic Environment Scotland had agreed that if the demolition were to go ahead, efforts should be made to preserve the facade.

The Sauchiehall Street store was a popular fixture on the shopping street for nearly nine decades having first opened in 1935 and was regarded as one of the city's oldest M&S stores. The art deco building was designed by the famous architect Robert Lutyens.

Updated designs for the development on Sauchiehall Street (Fusion Students)

As well as retaining the facade, the historic Wellington Arcade is set to be reinstated, providing a publicly accessible connection between Sauchiehall Street and Renfrew Street.

Brodie Berman, Acquisitions at Fusion Students said: “We are delighted to unveil our updated proposals for this iconic site in Glasgow’s city centre.

“The vision for the design has been subject to extensive community consultation over the last few months and we are pleased that the feedback from those conversations has been reflected in our updated proposals for the scheme.

“We believe the updated designs pay homage to the city’s architectural heritage and we are excited to bring forward the plans, which will help address the shortage of beds for the city’s student population and regenerate this part of Sauchiehall Street.

“Further details of the proposals will be presented in more detail at our upcoming public consultations and we look forward to holding further discussions with the local community and other interested parties.”

Paul Sweeney said: "I am delighted that after discussions with Fusion Students and Matt Brooks Architects, the redevelopment of the former Marks & Spencer store on Sauchiehall Street will now retain the 1935 art deco frontage by Robert Lutyens. Brilliant to see our heritage preserved."

Comments on the proposals can be submitted via the project website until April 5.
