Glasgow's Geek Retreat announces move away from original Union Street site

A popular board game and comic book store and cafe has announced that after almost 10 years it's set to close its site on Union Street.

Thankfully, fans of Geek Retreat can rest easy, as the owners confirmed they are moving to a bigger store in the new year.

Posting on Facebook, the team behind the project wrote: "Incredibly, it has been almost 10 years since we opened the doors of the first Geek Retreat, at 63 Union Street in Glasgow. Since then, this basement-level store has hosted countless events, sold endless amounts of Geeky merch and served up untold numbers of delicious milkshakes.

"What makes us most proud, is that from this little store in Glasgow, came the big idea that turned out to be far more meaningful than we ever imagined. Our customers became communities that thrived in the freedom to be themselves, revelled in the joy of playing games and made life-long friends. So from this store, started the heartbeat for our business and the next 50 Geek Retreat stores all around the UK – you belong at Geek Retreat."

Confirming that the last day of the current café will be Friday, December 30, the team were excited to announce that the brand-new Glasgow Geek Retreat in the St Enoch shopping centre will open in early 2023.

They added: "The new store is bigger, brighter and will offer the very best of Geek Retreat in prime location in the city centre. We will reveal more details and dates in the coming weeks and months."

Speaking about the current site, they explained that they had originally wanted to keep the current store open until the new one is ready, but that the recent flooding and other long-standing issues with the building had forced them to make the decision to close sooner rather than later.

The Geek Retreat team say they will now be hosting special events between the 26th and 30th, as well as events in pop-up locations while they get their new store ready for launch, which people can learn about via their Facebook page.
