Glasgow residents hit out at council over gritting on 'treacherous' roads

RESIDENTS across Glasgow have hit out over "treacherous" roads and pavements after temperatures dropped below freezing overnight.

People have taken to social media to criticise Glasgow City Council for the gritting of roads, pavements and cycleways across the city.

Taking to Twitter/X, several people have tweeted at the council to complain about the "lethal" conditions.

One person wrote: "Drove from Carntyne to Polmadie this morning, not a road or pavement gritted... absolutely lethal out there.

"Where are you [Glasgow City Council]?"

Another said: "[Glasgow City Council] can we have an explanation as to why city centre roads have not been gritted.

"They are treacherous."

It comes after a yellow weather warning for ice was issued for Glasgow from 4pm today (January 3) until 10am on Saturday.

A yellow weather warning is also in place for snow from 12am on Sunday, January 5 until 12pm on Monday.

A third person posted on X: "I see winter and the minus conditions have snuck up on [Glasgow City Council] once again.

"Not a spreader on the roads or salt on the pavement."

A council spokesperson said that gritting crews treated priority roads, footpaths and cycle lanes last night and early this morning, including in the city centre.

However another person claimed that there is no grit along Alexandra Parade, despite it being listed as a priority footway.

They said: "[Glasgow City Council] why has there been no grit placed along Alexandra Parade footpath?

"It's frozen black ice and is supposed to be a priority footpath according to the map.

"You knew the temperature was dipping."

Another added: "Ice has been forecast since last week yet [Glasgow City Council] don’t seem to have been able to salt a single pavement."

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: "Our gritting crews were out last night and again early this morning, treating priority carriageways, footways and cycle lanes.

"This includes the city centre area.

"We follow our agreed winter maintenance plan but continue to urge anyone using the road network to use the greatest possible care when travelling and be aware of the weather forecast.

"Even if it were feasible to grit all the city’s 1900km of roads and 3100km of footways every day, wintry weather will always pose risks to road users."

The council's winter gritting guide says priority one roads, footways and cycle routes will be treated if ice, hoar frost of snow is forecast.

This includes access routes to school during term times, city centre footways, the segregated Cycle Way network, and main bus routes.

Post-treatment of priority two and three footways and carriageways will be instructed if ice or snow is forecast and the hazards are expected to last more than 48 hours.

The post-salting will take place between 7.30am and 6.30pm.

It's understood priority two routes are expected to be treated today.

There are also 1616 salt bins located across Glasgow that can be used to grit your local area.

A map showing priority routes and the location of bins is available to view at glasgow.gov.uk/wintermaintenance.
