Glasgow reacts to the news of Batgirl blockbuster filmed entirely in the city being scrapped

The Glasgow public has reacted to the news that the Batgirl movie filmed in the city has been scrapped and will no longer to released to audiences.

It was reported on Wednesday that the major Hollywood production would not be released in late 2022 as planned after 'poor screen test results'. The major Hollywood movie was filmed entirely in Glasgow with the city transformed into Gotham by set builders, including alterations to shop fronts and cars.

Production reportedly cost an estimated 70 million dollars (£57.6 million) with Glasgow City Council agreeing to give Warner Bros £150,000 to bring the production to the city however the money is yet to be paid.

Following news that the film will no longer appear in theatres or on the streaming service HBO Max, Glasgow Live readers had their say.

One reader said: "So if Batman worked why not Batgirl? People in Scotland got a job out of it. It was a major inconvenience for a few months like road works and how we love a moan! But we would all have went to the cinema to watch it."

Another added: "Regardless of whether the film is released. The 150k the Council paid Warner Brothers is a drop in the ocean compared to the jobs created revenue generated for the Scottish film industry. Not to mention the hotels and amenities used by cast and film crews while in the city."

One reader commented: "It's such a shame as it looked like such a fun film with a clash of styles borrowing from all the different Bat films. When they filmed in Glasgow the directors looked as if they were having the best time making it. I was really looking forward to a fun bat film after the darkness of the batman. Such a shame."

Another said: "The crew were here for months . Money spent in our hotels, resturants shops all boosted our economy. The film wasn't binned because of the city so hopefully, the support they recieved will encourage them and other filmmakers to keep using Glasgow as a location. We have such limited industry left in the city so we need to embrace every option we can."

However, other members of the public believe the city had been inconvenienced and money spent by the council had now been justified.

One person said: "What a waste of time and inconvenience."

Another added: "Pure waste. Such a shame for the businesses that were affected. Hope they were compensated!"

One person commented: "I cannot work out what benefit this was got Glasgow don’t get it they paid the filmmakers did those affected & inconvenienced get compensated, I doubt it."

Another posted: "Film production companies are making profits by using our city as a set. Shouldn’t they be paying our council for that rather than the other way about?"

The council is said to be confident of attracting future films and TV shows to the city despite the blow, as the decision isn’t related to the location. It also hopes to maintain a relationship with Warner Bros.
