Glasgow Queen's Park Commonwealth Games statue to be restored after vandal attack

A wooden statue that was badly damaged by vandals over the weekend in south side park will soon be restored by carpenters.

The right arm belonging to Clyde, the Glasgow Commonwealth Games mascot was destroyed by vandals, prompting locals to ask whether it was “the end” for their 2014 hero.

South side resident Kathleen Caskie took to social media on Saturday to share a picture of the damaged mascot.

She wrote: “A sad sight in Queen’s Park. Clyde has lost his arm. We dragged it out the swap and back on his podium, but can he be saved or is this the end for our 2014 hero?”

Dismayed locals replied to the post, tagging Glasgow City Council, and campaigned to have the mascot restored to his former glory.

A council spokeswoman confirmed on Monday that Clyde would soon be “whole again”.

She said :“We know that Clyde is a well-loved Glasgow icon and despite the efforts of mindless vandals to permanently damage the statue in Queen’s Park our carpenters will now try to reattach the arm and make Clyde whole again.”
