Glasgow pubs to stay open longer on King Charles coronation bank holiday weekend

Glasgow City Council has confirmed pubs across the city will stay open longer during King Charles' coronation weekend.

The council extended their licensing hours during the May bank holiday weekend, with additional opening hours permitted on Saturday, May 6 (into Sunday morning) and Sunday, May 7 (into Monday morning), to allow people to enjoy an extra pint or two should they wish to celebrate the King's coronation.

Venues across England and Wales previously announced they will be staying open into the early hours to mark King Charles III's coronation, with local venues across Glasgow now permitted to keep their doors open for longer on the two consecutive days.

Glasgow City Council confirmed to Glasgow Live that the Licensing Board has determined to grant a general extension of one additional licensed hour beyond the terminal hour to all licensed premises with an on-sales facility on the following dates

  • The evening of Saturday May 6 into the early hours of Sunday May 7 2023
  • The evening of Sunday May 7 into the early hours of Monday May 8 2023

The general exemption will allow for regular closing time plus one extra hour.

It means that the standard licensed hours for on-sales within licensed premises across the city will be extended from 12am to 1am, permitting pubs across the city to continue to serve customers for longer.

Late opening premises, such as clubs, will also see their licensing hours extended by one hour.

Late night premises in Glasgow city centre will be permitted to remain open until 4am, instead of 3am, with venues out with the city centre allowed to keep doors open until 3am opposed to the regular 2am limit.

Each individual venue will be provided with the opportunity to decide whether or not to extend opening hours.
