Glasgow mural featuring Tunnock's Tea Cakes unveiled in Garnethill

Glasgow's got a new mural - and we think it's a belter.

Artist Ida Henrich painted the colourful creation in Reid Lane in Garnethill with the help of some local schoolchildren. The artwork runs along Reid Lane, which connects Dalhousie Street and Scott Street.

Ida, who is a Glasgow School of Art Graduate, wanted to bring a little bit of nature to what was described as a 'dingy lane'. Third year pupils from At Aloysius College and members of the local community weighed in on what they thought should be on the mural.

With a mossy green base colour, greenery and plants sit alongside different flowers, cats, woodland creatures and even a Tunnock's Tea Cake scattered across the long wall. Ida asked local youngsters what they loved about Garnethill and things that made them feel safe, before showing the pupils how to design, scale and paint a mural.

She told Glasgow Live: "I was inspired by the Garnethill Community Garden and old tenement tile designs, to create a mural in which wildlife and the imagination could roam free. In the workshops, I hoped to find out about the things local youngsters liked about Garnethill and what would make them feel happy and safe

“The workshops revealed wildlife, cats, community gardens, birds, foxes, sweets, swings, the bread oven, a rock and imagination as key factors. In my experience, murals bring a lot of joy to an area, particularly when local voices are being heard. Passersby are thankful for the colourful wall and say that the design makes them happy."

The piece of public art courtesy of a collaboration between the community, St Aloysius College and The Glasgow School of Art.

Carol Hutchinson, head of Art and Design, St Aloysius’ College added: "Our young people have felt a real sense of achievement and fulfilment in working with Ida and GSA and in gifting this fantastic mural to the local community.”
