A Glasgow man has scooped a whopping £10,000 a month for a year – only claiming the win after triple checking that the notification email from the National Lottery was actually real.
Shaun McCandlish, 31, matched five main numbers in the Set For Life draw on Thursday 15 September with a Lucky Dip that he bought on the National Lottery app.
Shaun said: “I decided to buy a couple of Set For Life tickets after seeing what the prize was for the game.

“What drew me to the game was the constant and steady amount each month, instead of one sum. When I told my friends I’d won the National Lottery, they jokingly told me not to go out and buy a Mustang but in reality, this win truly has set me up for life.”
When Shaun’s windfall came in, he received an automatic notification on his app. He checked his messages first thing on the Friday morning before work and found an email informing him that he was a winner. Not able to believe his luck, Shaun deleted and redownloaded the app three times to triple check it was real! When he was eventually convinced that he was indeed a lottery winner, he screamed the house down with excitement.
Laughing, he said: “I just about knocked my mum’s bedroom door off its hinges! I think I was close to giving her a heart attack, she needed a few minutes to calm her nerves before celebrating with me.”
While originally planning to keep his win quiet, the infectious excitement caused Shaun, who is a money advisor, to quickly spill the beans. He said: “I walked into work on the Friday and one of my co-workers simply said: ‘Good morning’ and I replied with: ‘I’ve won the lottery’. The cat was out of the bag!”
While grateful for the opportunity to be able to save up for a house deposit, he also plans to use some of his winnings on a trip of a lifetime to Japan with his partner. He said: “I’ve always wanted to visit Japan since I was young – from the capital city of Tokyo, to the rolling hills and hot springs in the countryside, there’s so much to explore. I’d love to see the gardens of the Imperial Palace and visit Mount Fuji – and of course ride the bullet train [Shinkansen].”
And his big win wasn’t his only bit of luck: “I actually won another £5 in the draw the week after!” I wonder how many of my friends have put on a Set For Life ticket since hearing about my win!”
Players can buy tickets for all of The National Lottery’s draw-based games including Set for Life, Lotto, EuroMillions and Thunderball. Shaun’s winning ‘Match 5’ numbers for the Set for Life draw on Thursday 15 September were 03, 13, 20, 23, 38. The Life Ball was 04.
