Glasgow M8 roadworks at Charing Cross will not be completed until late 2024

Major roadworks on Glasgow's M8 have been delayed once again and will not be complete until the end of 2024.

It has now been confirmed that the Woodside Viaduct slip road at Charing Cross is likely to remain shut until late 2024, despite a previous estimated end date of November 2023.

Amey, who are undertaking the project on behalf of Transport Scotland, said the delays are due to "bespoke propping designs and solutions" required for the works.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "The M8 Woodside Viaducts are an essential part of the road network serving Glasgow and greater Scotland. These refurbishment works are vital, and with each support location varying in size and depth, bespoke propping designs and solutions are required.

"Alongside this, each location presents its own challenges surrounding buried utility services – gas, water, electricity etc. - which has increased the complexity of the designs and construction needed. This has therefore impacted the propping timeline, taking the anticipated completion to late 2024.

"Installation of the propping will enable permanent repairs to be undertaken, the design of which is currently at a very early stage. An initial permanent repair trial will commence this summer, with information gathered informing subsequent works.

"All timings are based on current projections and are subject to review and revision as work progresses. Any changes to timings will be communicated to our stakeholders. Information and regular updates on this scheme are provided via Amey’s website – www.swtrunkroads.scot - their social media channels (Twitter and Facebook) @SWTrunkRoads, and a free Roadwork Alerts service.

"Updates on the projected timings of the scheme can be found within the M8 Woodside Viaducts FAQ on the Traffic Scotland website.

"We thank road users for their continued patience and understanding while this essential maintenance takes place."
