Glasgow launching free night buses in winter campaign this weekend

A new initiative is hoping to get Glaswegians out and about this festive period, with free night bus travel across the city this weekend.

The new campaign launched today, seeing First Bus offer up free night travel as part of a city-wide drive to encourage support for the night time economy in the city. Glasgow Life and the City Centre Task Force have come together for the Love Glasgow This Winter project, hoping to showcase events, attractions and retailers.

500 complimentary night bus rides will be available this weekend on a first-come, first-served basis with 250 trips available on both December 16 and 17. Riders will need to download the First Bus App before boarding, covering locations from Pollok to Hamilton.

On downloading the app, riders can enter a unique code found on the First Bus Glasgow website. Codes will be released on Friday morning.

Graeme Macfarlan, Commercial Director for First Bus Scotland, said: “We are delighted to play our part in the Love Glasgow This Winter campaign and support Glasgow City Council’s promoting the many ways people can enjoy the city over the festive period.

“We are proud to continue to support the city’s night-time economy, particularly during the crucial run up to the festive period, by being in the position to offer a network of night bus services at the weekend that connect the city centre with most areas of Glasgow and beyond.”

Stuart Patrick, Co-Chair of the City Centre Task Force and Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce added: “Love Glasgow This Winter is a great initiative, and couldn’t have come at a more important time.

“Businesses rely on a spike in trade and footfall at this time of year, whether it’s retail, hospitality or leisure - so getting people into the city and through the door is crucial. This funding from the City Centre Task Force aims to address that concern.

“From highlighting the city’s varied consumer offer to increasing public transport options during a period of planned rail disruption, we’re giving people even more reasons to spend the full day in Glasgow.

The team behind the project suggest visiting St Enoch Square and George Square, both open until 10pm every day. They added: “No visit is complete without a trip to Argyll Arcade - the home of diamonds or the John Lewis beauty hall in Buchanan Galleries.

“The city’s world-renowned reputation for live music will be on shining display as hometown hero Paolo Nutini takes to the OVO Hydro for a sold out five night run, or spot the stars of the future at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut.

“For those looking to keep the festivities going well into the night, check out late-night bars including newcomer Hide and Seek or mainstay Nice ‘n’ Sleazy. Or hit the dancefloor for your Christmas night out, at The Garage, Bamboo or Kong.”

For those who don’t manage to grab the free journeys, prices start at just £2.65. Find out more here.
